We worked on the reference page of the science fair project which is due tomorrow. Some students didn't bring in their resource material to work on. Others have already finished this page and get an early bonus point. There are a possible 80 points for turning in science fair sections 1-8 on time that will be added to the science grade for the third quarter. Some students are way ahead and some have barely started. Please check your student's work and see how far he has gotten.

There is no book homework for tonight. We are starting to write the review of literature using a graphic organizer. They are to use their outline to arrange the facts they find on each part of the outline and enter it into the boxes as if the boxes were note cards. It is possible for them to write enough on the front and back of one page of the GO to write their first three to four paragraphs or even more.
Today the students were to turn in the corrections for the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Purpose and Hypothesis. Only one student did in Mrs. Beal's class and only seven turned them in from Mrs. Meyers' class. Please check with your student and make sure these are ready to be handed in tomorrow.

I need to correct the explanation that I gave earlier. There are two circumstances in algebraic addition where numbers become negative and two where they become positive. Both adding a negative and subtracting a positive is the same as plain subtraction. For example, +3 - (2) is the same a 3-2 which equals +1. +3 + (-2) also is the same as 3-2. In these instance I am only referring to the second number where there are two signs in front of it. The first number retains its sign, whether positive or negative.
In the case of same signs, the numbers in both situations become positive. For example, 3 - (-2) is the same as 3 + 2 which equals 5. the other example is 3 + (+2) is the same thing equaling 5.
If the first number is negative, then the operation must be done with that in mind. For example:
-3 - (+2) = -5
-3 + (-2) = -5
-3 + (+2) = -1
-3 - (-2) = -1. In this problem, the tow negative signs in front of the two take on the expression "add the opposite."
I hope this has been helpful.

We started a somewhat confusing concept today on algebraic addition. One thing you can help them with is the idea that if you subtract a negative number, like -(-3), (this is commonly called "adding the opposite" in algebra), or subtract a positive number, like -(4), the number becomes negative, like -3 and -4 from the previous answers. In the same manner, if you add a negative number, like +(-4), the number also becomes negative, in this case a -4. Naturally, then, adding a positive number, like +(+5), the number is positive, +5.

Hi Parents,
There will be a quiz on Monday over sections 4.4 - 4.7. I gave the students a list of terms to study, but they also need to review the sections. I can see from my desk that several students decided to leave their books and spirals here for the weekend. I will have to check and see how these students do on the quiz.
Due Monday is the rough draft of outline for the Review of Literature. On Tuesday, they must bring their resources to be checked by me. Included in the resources should be a book, an encyclopedia article (copied, if you wish) and any other source like another encyclopedia article (or several) and Internet articles printed so I can actually see them. Please do not use Wikipedia as a source of information. The site is editable and this can alter the information that your student may come upon at any one time. They can use it to get ideas, but not as reference material. Wednesday they need to turn in corrections for the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Purpose, and Hypothesis. After that, the first set of paragraphs for the review of literature will be due on March 14.
Thanks,

Most of the students did a much better job on the reworked test that on the original. Of course, It was homework so they could use their books to help. In that way it was more like a regular homework assignment. This is what they should be doing when they work on assignments. The book shows, with each problem, where the concept was taught. They should go back and reread the lesson if they come upon something they don't understand right away.

After grading the maths, I found that the highest grade was an 85%. We went over the test, and I gave them another copy of the test to redo for homework. They must show all work. Some students only received a 30%. I know I am trying my hardest to convey the concepts in every lesson. I will try to do more. At the same time, however, the students must try their hardest too. Most of them do not do rework. Sometimes they leave their spirals in the room or the locker, so they don't even have them for rework or the homework. Some are really trying, but some don't care. Just letting you know what is going on here.
