Homework is CC 8.4. On Wednesday there will be a quiz over sections 8.2 - 8.4.
Most of the students have done exceptionally well on the Science Fair project. If you are interested in having your child complete most if not all of the project for next year, please sign them up for the Science Fair Summer Camp which I facilitate. Space is limited to the first ten students. We will meet once a week for three hours for three weeks, then take a two week break, followed by three more sessions. Please call the office (847-385-2012 or 2019) for dates and cost. Students from past years have benefited greatly from having their project mostly done by the time school started.

Science Fair is quickly drawing to a close. Students may bring in, and some have, their completed papers tomorrow or Tuesday. These will be graded on time. The finished paper is worth two test grades.
On Tuesday they are required to bring in all the parts for the board in a baggie or folder and their board. They will lay out the board and put the pieces on the board so that I can see that everything is done and ready to be glued down (with rubber cement please). Then they will take them home, finish them up and bring them in on Friday. The board itself is worth a test grade.
There is no book homework for tonight.

We reviewed the tests today. Many students did very well on this one.
We also made a mockup of the science fair board using just a piece of notebook paper. Please check with your student so they can show you what it is to look like. Be sure to buy a three-fold display board and some rubber cement. Over the many years and many projects I have been involved in, I have found that rubber cement is the best pasting product to use as it is easy to clean, does not leave wavy paper like water-based glues, and the paper is easily removable in case something needs to be repositioned or removed and replaced.
I told the students they should make a new folder in the folder for their science fair project sections. The new folder could be labeled "sections for the board." They should pull these sections into this new folder: Purpose, Hypothesis, Materials, Methods of Procedure, Tables and Graphs, Conclusion, and abstract and Safety Sheet. These are the only sections that have to go on the board. Once they have been copied into this new folder, they can be modified for the science fair board. For instance, take the title off the page entitled Purpose and take out the double-spacing. You will use the labels that come with the display board or make your own to put on the board. You will make the font larger to fill up two to three lines so it will be easier to see on the board. Here is an example:
The purpose of this science fair experiment is to discover which brand of fertilizer will help plants grow best.
I could not choose the exact size I wanted here in this blog but I would have tried to make it take up only two lines or all of three lines. Do the same for the other sections. If you have questions, please email me.
I hope this has been helpful.

In class today we started a section about soil which includes information about rocks and minerals. If you have any that can be brought in for the class to see, that would be helpful.
On Saturday, there is a rock identification class held at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art in Elmhurst. You can visit at lizzadromuseum.org.There are two times for the class - at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. Cost is $5 and you just register. You can do that at 630-833-1616. Some of the kids sounded really interested.

The students have a comprehension check to complete by Monday. The corrections to the Results section of the project are due Monday. Yesterday I talked to them about the abstract and safety sheet. I read to them an abstract and a safety sheet. You can go to www.ijas.org and on the left is a place where you can click on Documents and Forms. Below the first section you will be able to choose to download the Abstract and Safety Sheet. When they are downloaded to your computer, your student can type the information on there. I went into great detail about this so they should be able to do it.

The homework for the weekend is to work on the planet report and poster. Today the students used a worksheet I handed out and books from our library (the library had no books on Mars, Mercury, Uranus, or Pluto which was downgraded to a dwarf planet - I am sure any donations would be greatly appreciated) to gather information for their oral report and visual aid. They are to decide between their partners which parts of the project each will do and work together on it. We will spend more time on Tuesday getting the poster ready for the oral reports to begin on Wednesday.

Today's lesson had to do with the order of operations (PEMDAS) and signed numbers. When numbers have negative signs, it becomes critical to know how to apply those signs correctly along with performing the oder of operations correctly. This can be difficult because it is detail-oriented. However, This concept is a major part of any algebra class and is critical to learn. I will be giving the students homework over the weekend from the supplemental practice section so they can work on the past two new concepts.
The homework for tonight is L. 85 - Practice problems e-f and Mixed practice #15 - 30. They can do the practice problems a-d for bonus points.
There will be a test tomorrow. The students should review the following lessons for the test: L. 19, L. 26, 28, 30, 34, 48, 52, 53, and lessons 65 - 80.

The Chapter Check Up is due on Wednesday and the test for Chapter 5 will take place on Thursday.
I understand that some of the students did not understand what I meant when I said I wanted to see a table for their science fair experiment. They haven't done the experiments yet so what I want to see is a device where they can add the numbers, whether height, length, days, time, temperature, when they start their experiment. It is important that this table is ready before they start.
Thanks,
Mrs. W

I need to correct the explanation that I gave earlier. There are two circumstances in algebraic addition where numbers become negative and two where they become positive. Both adding a negative and subtracting a positive is the same as plain subtraction. For example, +3 - (2) is the same a 3-2 which equals +1. +3 + (-2) also is the same as 3-2. In these instance I am only referring to the second number where there are two signs in front of it. The first number retains its sign, whether positive or negative.
In the case of same signs, the numbers in both situations become positive. For example, 3 - (-2) is the same as 3 + 2 which equals 5. the other example is 3 + (+2) is the same thing equaling 5.
If the first number is negative, then the operation must be done with that in mind. For example:
-3 - (+2) = -5
-3 + (-2) = -5
-3 + (+2) = -1
-3 - (-2) = -1. In this problem, the tow negative signs in front of the two take on the expression "add the opposite."
I hope this has been helpful.

We started a somewhat confusing concept today on algebraic addition. One thing you can help them with is the idea that if you subtract a negative number, like -(-3), (this is commonly called "adding the opposite" in algebra), or subtract a positive number, like -(4), the number becomes negative, like -3 and -4 from the previous answers. In the same manner, if you add a negative number, like +(-4), the number also becomes negative, in this case a -4. Naturally, then, adding a positive number, like +(+5), the number is positive, +5.

Hi Parents,
There will be a quiz on Monday over sections 4.4 - 4.7. I gave the students a list of terms to study, but they also need to review the sections. I can see from my desk that several students decided to leave their books and spirals here for the weekend. I will have to check and see how these students do on the quiz.
Due Monday is the rough draft of outline for the Review of Literature. On Tuesday, they must bring their resources to be checked by me. Included in the resources should be a book, an encyclopedia article (copied, if you wish) and any other source like another encyclopedia article (or several) and Internet articles printed so I can actually see them. Please do not use Wikipedia as a source of information. The site is editable and this can alter the information that your student may come upon at any one time. They can use it to get ideas, but not as reference material. Wednesday they need to turn in corrections for the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Purpose, and Hypothesis. After that, the first set of paragraphs for the review of literature will be due on March 14.

Most of the students did a much better job on the reworked test that on the original. Of course, It was homework so they could use their books to help. In that way it was more like a regular homework assignment. This is what they should be doing when they work on assignments. The book shows, with each problem, where the concept was taught. They should go back and reread the lesson if they come upon something they don't understand right away.

After grading the maths, I found that the highest grade was an 85%. We went over the test, and I gave them another copy of the test to redo for homework. They must show all work. Some students only received a 30%. I know I am trying my hardest to convey the concepts in every lesson. I will try to do more. At the same time, however, the students must try their hardest too. Most of them do not do rework. Sometimes they leave their spirals in the room or the locker, so they don't even have them for rework or the homework. Some are really trying, but some don't care. Just letting you know what is going on here.

I was amazed when I hung my coat up today that six students had left their spirals in the locker. This means that six students either did not do their homework or did it on a single piece of paper. I don't allow single sheets to be turned in, but I do want all work and answers to be done in a spiral, hopefully just one spiral dedicated to their math homework. Single sheets are easily lost, and when a student has to do rework, the assignment usually never makes it back to my desk. One student is now using two spirals and often does not have the one with him that has the current homework in it. Please make sure your student is using one spiral just for math.

Homework for today is Comp Check 4.5. I am waiting for some of the students to return their three preliminary science fair worksheets. They need to finish these before they can begin their projects. Already, some of them have been unable to do they projects they want to because someone else chose it first or there wasn't enough information on the worksheet.

There is no homework other than getting the completed packets from the class project turned in (everything in the table of contents except the review of literature and the references page) and filling out the three preliminary project worksheets. I told the kids today they have till Tuesday to get these turned in. After these have been handed in I will review them and let them know which one they can do for their project. Shortly thereafter, I will send home a list of due dates to which it will be vital they follow strictly.

The homework for today is to correct last night's homework. We spent time going over how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percents. In case you want to know, here is a quick guide so you can help your child. Fractions are really division problems. Divide the top number by the bottom number and use a decimal if necessary (when you don't come out with a whole number answer). You have just converted a fraction to a decimal. For instance, 3/4, when you divide 3 by 4, becomes 0.75, which is seventy-five hundredths. Since percents are "over one hundred" and 0.75 is seventy-five one hundredths, the percent conversion is easy to do from the decimal number. It would be 75/100 or 75%. Notice that I moved the decimal two places to the right to go from the 0.75 to 75%. In order to use a percent in a math problem, the percent has to be changed to a decimal by moving the decimal point the opposite way, or two places to the left. For instance, if you wanted to know how much you will save off of a coat worth $150 at an 45% discount, you change the 45% to 0.45 and multiply it by $150. To change a percent to a fraction, just put it over 100 or 1000 if there are three numbers after the decimal point. If you are converting 12 1/4% to a fraction, remember that the decimal starts after the whole numbers - 12, and 1/4 % ("and" means the decimal point goes here). Change the 1/4 to .25, then you have 12.25%. After you have gotten to that form, you just move the decimal point two places to the left for form a decimal number rather than a percent (12 1/4%) and you have 0.1225!!
I hope this has been helpful.

I am grading that they finished all the sections and turned them in. See their Table of Contents for a list of the sections. They do not have to turn in a Review of Literature or a Reference page for this packet. Please be working with them to finish all three Preliminary Topic Worksheet pages. Please have your student hand in one copy of everything we have done for the class science fair project. This must include a title page, table of contents, acknowledgments, purpose, hypothesis, materials, methods of procedure, table and graph, written discussion of table and graph, and conclusion. We did most of this in class and then they were to type it up and turn it in. Some sections that I make corrections should also be turned in corrected. I just want to be sure they have done all these sections. We wrote pieces of the review of literature and not all of them came in so I did not make copies of that section for everyone. Because the students used many different books for the ROL, I did not do a reference page either. You child will have a copy of everything for their project except those two sections for use as an example.
Otherwise, there is no homework tonight.

In class today we worked on two more sections of our class science fair project: Results - Discussion and Conclusion. They should type these two pages and turn them in tomorrow. Those who have already done this or want to work ahead can and should also put their table into a spreadsheet program like Excel. They brought home a sheet of explanation that Mr. Yang handed out. Today someone in the class didn't do their homework because he said that no one wrote it on the board in their classroom. Since I teach science in my own classroom, it is necessary for each child to write down what the homework assignment is for themselves even if the teacher's helper forgets to write it on Mrs. Manahan's assignment board.
