7th grade math
I was amazed when I hung my coat up today that six students had left their spirals in the locker. This means that six students either did not do their homework or did it on a single piece of paper. I don't allow single sheets to be turned in, but I do want all work and answers to be done in a spiral, hopefully just one spiral dedicated to their math homework. Single sheets are easily lost, and when a student has to do rework, the assignment usually never makes it back to my desk. One student is now using two spirals and often does not have the one with him that has the current homework in it. Please make sure your student is using one spiral just for math.
Homework for today is L. 64 - all Practice problems and Mixed Practice - #11-16 and 21-30/

5th grade science fair, 5th grade science
Today I gave each student a list of due dates for their SFP (science fair project). The first one is for Monday. They will turn in a rough draft (RD) of the table of contents, Acknowledgments, Purpose, and Hypothesis. They can use the samples of these sections from the class projects. Mrs. Beal also gave them a complete copy of a project form a former students.
There will be a quiz tomorrow which will cover the word list I gave them yesterday.
Thanks,

I gave the students some words to study for the quiz coming up. They also have a worksheet to fill out. One of the questions is from section 5.4 which we haven't done yet, but they can go ahead and look for the answer. We will review for the quiz then take it at the end of the period.

Homework for today is Comp Check 4.5. I am waiting for some of the students to return their three preliminary science fair worksheets. They need to finish these before they can begin their projects. Already, some of them have been unable to do they projects they want to because someone else chose it first or there wasn't enough information on the worksheet.

There is no homework other than getting the completed packets from the class project turned in (everything in the table of contents except the review of literature and the references page) and filling out the three preliminary project worksheets. I told the kids today they have till Tuesday to get these turned in. After these have been handed in I will review them and let them know which one they can do for their project. Shortly thereafter, I will send home a list of due dates to which it will be vital they follow strictly.

The homework for today is to correct last night's homework. We spent time going over how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percents. In case you want to know, here is a quick guide so you can help your child. Fractions are really division problems. Divide the top number by the bottom number and use a decimal if necessary (when you don't come out with a whole number answer). You have just converted a fraction to a decimal. For instance, 3/4, when you divide 3 by 4, becomes 0.75, which is seventy-five hundredths. Since percents are "over one hundred" and 0.75 is seventy-five one hundredths, the percent conversion is easy to do from the decimal number. It would be 75/100 or 75%. Notice that I moved the decimal two places to the right to go from the 0.75 to 75%. In order to use a percent in a math problem, the percent has to be changed to a decimal by moving the decimal point the opposite way, or two places to the left. For instance, if you wanted to know how much you will save off of a coat worth $150 at an 45% discount, you change the 45% to 0.45 and multiply it by $150. To change a percent to a fraction, just put it over 100 or 1000 if there are three numbers after the decimal point. If you are converting 12 1/4% to a fraction, remember that the decimal starts after the whole numbers - 12, and 1/4 % ("and" means the decimal point goes here). Change the 1/4 to .25, then you have 12.25%. After you have gotten to that form, you just move the decimal point two places to the left for form a decimal number rather than a percent (12 1/4%) and you have 0.1225!!
I hope this has been helpful.

Hi! I hope you all had a very nice and loving Valentine's Day. There is no homework from the book for tonight, but only a few students have turned in all sections from the class science fair project. I am grading that they finished all the sections and turned them in. See their Table of Contents for a list of the sections. They do not have to turn in a Review of Literature or a Reference page for this packet. Please be working with them to finish all three Preliminary Topic Worksheet pages. These are very important and due on Friday.

Please have your student hand in one copy of everything we have done for the class science fair project. This must include a title page, table of contents, acknowledgments, purpose, hypothesis, materials, methods of procedure, table and graph, written discussion of table and graph, and conclusion. We did most of this in class and then they were to type it up and turn it in. Some sections that I make corrections should also be turned in corrected. I just want to be sure they have done all these sections. We wrote pieces of the review of literature and not all of them came in so I did not make copies of that section for everyone. Because the students used many different books for the ROL, I did not do a reference page either. You child will have a copy of everything for their project except those two sections for use as an example.
Otherwise, there is no homework tonight.

I checked my grade book and no one in 5B has and only a few from 5A haven't turned in the printed version of the table and graph for the class science fair project. It will be necessary to use a spreadsheet program to do this. The students were all given a sheet of instructions from Mr. Yang as to how to do this. There are a few in each class who have not turned in their typed version of the Results Discussion and the Conclusion sections. Please turn these in as soon as possible.
