7th grade math

Hi all.  We took the math test today and one of the students received a 100%.  Two others got B's.  There were also C's and D's and one F.

Tomorrow they will receive a packet for them to do over the Christmas break.  It has twelve pages and contains mostly work on fractions.  This will be due the day we get back.  If they were to do two pages a day, they would be done in short order.

Thanks and a Merry Christmas to everyone.

5th grade Science

Is there anyone who has potting soil left that we could have?  Both classes are doing projects involving growing of plants and I don't have enough potting soil.  Thanks.  We will be setting up the project when we come back from Christmas break.

The students are going to see the Narnia movie tomorrow so we won't have science class.  There will be a quiz on Friday and they have been given a word bank to study from.
Thanks,
Mrs. Wilson

4th Grade Science

Hi Parents. We read two sections in science class today.  The students need to do both comp checks to be able to get to the test by next Friday.  Because of the Christmas program practices, we have lost a few class times lately.  Mrs. Manahan has been gracious enough to give me a few classes during a different period so we don't lose out on too much science.  On Monday we will review for and take a quiz on pages 66 through 70.  There will be no class on Tuesday, then on Wednesday we will grade their chapter check up on page 73.  They have been instructed to start working on it.  On Thursday, we will review for the test on Chapter 3 and on Friday they will take the test and have no homework over Christmas break.

This will be the last entry to my blog for the fourth graders until next year since I have told you everything that will be happening for this and next week.  Please have a Christ-filled Christmas season remembering that the great, almighty God became one of us so we could become one of His.

Hi parents.  There is no new homework for tonight.  I have been appalled by how poorly the students are doing on their assignments.  Not only that, but they are not doing any rework.  The mid-term grades are going to be quite low, especially since I changed the weights for homework and quizzes.  Please do whatever you can to check that your student is checking problems then reworking the ones they miss.

For tonight, I told them they could rework L. 39, 40, and 41.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

Hi to all.

7th grade math

Hi everyone,
I had a great time in FL then came back to snow and cold and a cold!!

Homework for tonight is L. 41 Practice Problems and Mixed Practice evens.

I am worried that most of the students are not doing rework on the problems.  They don't understand how adversely this is going to affect their grades.  Quizzes and homework are now on the same level, but they can do rework on the homework while they can't correct the quizzes.

Please see that they are correcting homework.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

I am sorry I didn't post yesterday.  I am preparing to be gone for Thursday and Friday so I had a lot to do.  The homework for L. 39 was all the Mixed Practice.  Today's homework is the same but for L. 40.  Tomorrow there will be a test covering all material from L. 1 through L. 35.  Your student should review all the sections and even go back to their homework and redo the problems they didn't get correct.  They will have a take home page for Thursday having to do with circles.  They should use their books.  Friday the substitute will give three speed quizzes and send home another worksheet.  The students will take speed quizzes on these two pages withing the next two weeks.

5th grade Science

The fifth graders took a quiz today which they all thought was really easy.  There is no homework tonight.  Most of them have turned in the rough draft of their science fair paragraph.  I made comments, etc. and handed them back.  These should be corrected, typed in Times New Roman with 12 point font and double-spaced.  Please use one tab and the beginning of each paragraph.  They should put their name, class section (5A or 5B), and the topic of the paragraph somewhere on the page, then email it to me by Sunday at jjwilson23@gmail.com.  I will put these together into one flowing report and have copies made for each of them.

Thanks,

Hi all;
I spoke to the students about their lack of focus in doing their homework.  I think that most, if not all of them have the capability to do well in this class.  They need to put in the few extra minutes to do their homework well and the burden of doing the rework will be lifted as will their grades!

The assignment for today is L. 36 - all practice problems and MP 1, 5, 6, 9-11, 17, 18, 21-26 and 30.

Hi Parents.  Homework was Comp Check 2.9 today and most of them finished it in class.  Since they are going on a field trip tomorrow, I won't see them until Wednesday.

Many of the 5th graders turned in their Review of Literature paragraph which I will return on Wed.  They must make the written in corrections, type it (double-spaced, 12 pt. font in Times New Roman) and send it to me by email - jjwilson23@gmail.com.  Then I will be able to put the pieces all into one paper.  If you follow the guidelines, it will be much easier to merge it all.  Also, please do not put an extra line between paragraphs but do indent the beginning of each paragraph.  These should be sent to me by Friday.  If you have questions you can respond to this blog or email me at the above address.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

7th grade math

Hi.  There was a "test" in class today that the students can take home and finish.  It will be graded as a quiz.  This means they will not be able to do rework on it but will have the same weight as homework which they can do rework on.

7th grade math

Hi Parents:
I have decided to change the percentage weight for the three kinds of work that the students do in math class.  It seems to me that the students have not been working hard on their homework because they know that a good test or quiz score can negate the homework score. The homework is where they actually practice the concepts we are learning, and if they do not do well on the homework, they will flounder eventually.  Therefore, I am weighing the homework at 30% of their grade and quizzes at 30% and tests at 40%.  I hope this will better reflect how they do on all math work.

Thanks,
Mrs. Wilson

4th Grade Science

Homework for today is to do C. C. 3.2.  I have also asked the students to look around their neighborhood and find various leaves of trees that grow there.  They may go online or look at a field guide from the library to try and identify the leaves.  We learned that even the needles of pines, firs, spruces, etc. are their leaves. Thanks,
Mrs. W.

5th grade science fair

Hi all;
Yesterday we reviewed their quizzes and I am glad to say most everyone did a really fine job.  We also graded the homework and there was no homework assigned for today.  We are going to start work in class on the Review of Literature.  They will go through books that have been taken out of the library and write note cards of information for their section of the paper.  We will also do this tomorrow.  The next section in the book is very short and they will do it on their own with the comp check being due Thursday.

Thanks,
Mrs. W.

7th grade math

I am sorry I didn't post to the blog yesterday.  I was extremely busy with trying to get all last minute assignments graded since grades have to be turned in tomorrow.  The assignment for yesterday was L. 31 all practice problems and #16 - 27 and L. 32 all practice problems and odds #3 - 21.  Today we hit the coordinate plane again and I wrote points on the graph on my white board for them to name, and a list of points for them to draw a figure.  This will be their homework.  For those who are absent, they should come and see me about this assignment when they get back.

Thanks,
Mrs. W.

4th Grade Science

Hey everybody,
Class 4B is working toward a test.  I have decided to give the test tomorrow instead of today because I haven't had a chance to actually discuss the kinds of questions that will be on the test or review orally with the students.  This test will be part of their first quarter grade.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

5th grade Science

Hi!
We graded Comp Check 2.6 yesterday, then talked about science fair review of literature (ROL).  We visited the library (5B) and took out several books about plants.  We discussed two ways to tell if a book has information they may need.  Today the students will be assigned a small section of the paper to write.  Since they are only writing a paragraph or two, the rough draft of these paragraphs will be due next Friday.  They may be typed or hand written.  If typed (by parent is fine), please double space so I have space to make corrections or suggestions.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

7th grade math

Hi all,
we had a test yesterday and some of the problems that were missed needed to be reviewed.  That took most of the class period.  The students have two worksheets to do (not optional) that are due tomorrow.

7th grade math

Hi everyone.  Here is the homework for tomorrow.  L. 29 - the Practice Set all; Multiple Practice 1-3, 7-11, 21-28.  There will be a test tomorrow that will cover any material through Lesson 25.  They should go back over their homework amd make any corrections to further understand the material.

I asked a general question to the class today as to why they are not doing rework, when, over the past several lessons, many of them are getting F's on their homework.  The answer came back that they didn't want to.  So it is my understanding that they do not see the value of 1. getting as many problems correct as they can in the first place (they wouldn't have to do much rework then) and 2.  doing the rework to come to a better understanding of the concepts.  Would you please talk with your student about this?  Also, please make it a habit to review their math spirals so you can see their scores for yourself.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

4th Grade Science

Hi parents;
There is a quiz tomorrow on pages 26 - 39.  We went over all the terms and then some.  They can use a few different methods to study. They can use note cards to write out terms and concepts, re-read each section, study the comprehension checks and make sure they know the right answers.  I hope they all do well.

Thanks,

5th grade Science

Today we chose a science fair project to do as a class.  We are going to microwave seeds for increasing amounts of time and see if the microwaves have an effect on the growth of the seeds.  Homework for tonight is Comp Check. 2.2.

Have a great day,
Mrs. W

7th grade math

Several of the students did poorly on L. 21 so we went over it in class.  I am finding that some of the difficulty is in understanding what the questions are asking and jumping in to solve before they have carefully read the entire problem.  I encouraged them strongly to take the extra few seconds to come to a more thorough understanding of each problem before diving in.  Some of the students didn't do all parts of the problem.  This is just carelessness.  If there is a way you can help them take a little more time with their math, that would be very helpful.  Their homework for tonight is L. 22.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

Hi Parents.  The students are to read section 2.8 and do the comprehension check.  Some of them finished this in class.  Please be sure they are writing complete sentences turning the question into a statement which then contains the answer.  If the question says to define, they just write the word and use the glossary definition.  If the instruction is to list something, then they can just list.

Thanks,
Mrs. W

5th grade science fair

Hi Parents.  Please don't start hyperventilating and faint.  Fifth grade is starting a class science fair project today.  As a class, I will take the students step by step through the process of doing a SFP so they can do their own in the spring.  We will do most of the work in class for the first one, and some of the work in the class for the second one.  They will all be contributing to the class project as I assign them.  They may need to type something at home.  I hope you will get behind me on this and help them get ready for the next three years.  I will keep you informed by this blog as to what is coming up.
